Having Twins, Gaining A Family

The Dionisio Family

The Dionisio family initially spent 36 nights at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston.

We found out we were pregnant with twins on Christmas Eve. I will never forget the day our doctor said we had two heartbeats. Our entire family bawled as this was the best Christmas present ever!

Our journey would take a turn during my 30-week appointment. I had no idea I was in labor, but the boys were coming. As an emergency C-section. Arthur and Henry were born on June 30, 2010 and were immediately taken to the NICU. That night I got to see them—the emotion of "I am actually a mom," still resonates with me today.

As we all began to recover, we were told the boys were going to be staying in NICU for a long time. The nurse then set us up on the list for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston (RMHC Charleston). We had heard of it before, but honestly had no idea what it was.

Finding a Place Like Home

We went to RMHC Charleston and got checked in. Everyone was so nice, and we were amazed at how it worked: Here was a place like home that feeds you, gives you shelter and supports you. It was also a blessing to be around other people because my husband had to go back to work, and I stayed mostly by myself.

One day I was introduced to the Jordan family from Myrtle Beach who also had twins. The mom was also staying alone at the RMHC Charleston and we slowly became great friends. We shared stories, thoughts and fears, sitting on the balcony of our home-away-from-home.

In the eight years since our first stay, we've stayed at RMHC Charleston several times when the twins have had surgeries. And this year the Dionisio and Jordan kids did a "Gardy Raiser," an idea of their own, and filled two vans up with wish list items!

We can't express how much the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston means to us. It is more than a house, it's a home. And it's the people inside the house, from families staying there to the people in charge, that makes it a home.

You can help provide the resources needed to help families like the Dionisios live comfortably when in need. Contact Alix Tew at alix@rmhcharleston.org or 843-723-7957 Ext. 303 to learn how.

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to RMHC Charleston or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

Tax on the growth in value of an asset—such as real estate or stock—since its original purchase.

Securities, real estate or any other property having a fair market value greater than its original purchase price.

Real estate can be a personal residence, vacation home, timeshare property, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and RMHC Charleston where you agree to make a gift to RMHC Charleston and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
