'RMHC Charleston Was Where I Needed to Be'

Cherie Cebreiros with Lucas

Cherie Cebreiros with baby, Lucas.

My son Lucas was born nine weeks early due to preterm labor. I had never been so scared in my life and I didn't know how I was going to leave my baby at MUSC (The Medical University of South Carolina) when I live over two hours away in Myrtle Beach. Thank God for the Ronald McDonald House that gave me the good news the day I was released from the hospital that they had a room for me. I had never seen a Ronald McDonald House and I had no idea what to expect—needless to say, I was nervous.

I remember pulling up to the big white house and I saw the nice kid's playground out front and then I saw the sign that read Lucas Park. I started to cry because I knew this was where I needed to be for my sweet baby Lucas! I could not believe how nice and wonderful RMHC Charleston was. The kitchen, living space, library, computer room, kid's room and especially the staff was beyond all expectations.

Lucas ended up spending the first 70 days of his life at MUSC. He had to battle pneumonia along with his premature lungs and stomach. I spent 65 days at RMHC Charleston and during that time I met other families that became my family and still are to this day. I had a happy place that my 3-year-old daughter could come and visit me while I took a break from caring for her little brother. I had some of the best meals cooked and served to me especially because they were made with love.

It's crazy to look back at it 6 years later but RMHC Charleston gave me the most wonderful experience during the hardest time of my life. To be able to make that possible is truly a miracle and blessing that I hope to continue to pay back for years to come. Thank you, RMHC Charleston, for keeping my family together and making it possible for me to have a healthy 6-year-old wild little man!

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to RMHC Charleston or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

Tax on the growth in value of an asset—such as real estate or stock—since its original purchase.

Real estate can be a personal residence, vacation home, timeshare property, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

You fund this trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and RMHC Charleston where you agree to make a gift to RMHC Charleston and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
