A Shelter in the Midst of the Storm

Avery with her familyWhat is the Ronald McDonald House?

Honestly, I couldn't have answered this question with much confidence in the past. I had often seen the collection container at the counter or drive-thru at every McDonalds and thought it was just another charity that I wasn't interested in being a part of.

I never really knew what the Ronald McDonald House was until my life changed dramatically on November 4, 2016.

Avery showing off her scarThat was the day my family found out that my daughter had been living with a brain tumor for several years and needed immediate brain surgery. This came as a huge shock to all of us, and we were completely unsure of what the next weeks and possibly years would bring. We were rushed from our home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Medical University South Carolina Health in Charleston (MUSC). We had no idea what the future would hold.

During the first day of trying to figure everything out, my wife reached out to the Ronald McDonald House and secured a room. This allowed my wife or myself a comfortable bed, private shower, meals, a place to cry privately and a little bit of peace of mind during this awful time. Not only were we welcomed, the House staff members continually reminded us that they were always there if we needed anything.

The next few weeks were certainly not enjoyable, but having a place that we could essentially call home for our time at MUSC gave us a place to get away for a little while. Surrounded by other families going through similar tragic events gave us hope—especially as we began to speak with them and watch them leave with good results. After getting comfortable enough with the staff, I met two of the people who helped run the place. These women were the most compassionate and friendly people I could have ever dreamed of meeting. We quickly became friends, and we still keep in touch. I hope to never lose their friendship.

I can answer that question now. It is a home full of people who are all going through similar tough times. It is place you never want to have to use, but you couldn't be more grateful to have it once you need it. It is a nonprofit organization that isn't in it for the money but for the peace of mind and comfort of families who need it. The House is filled with the most amazing staff and volunteers I have ever witnessed. The Ronald McDonald House is where I will donate my time and money from here on out.

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to RMHC Charleston or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.

An endowed gift can create a new endowment or add to an existing endowment. The principal of the endowment is invested and a portion of the principal’s earnings are used each year to support our mission.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

You give assets to a trust that pays our organization set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings to you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

You fund this type of trust with cash or appreciated assets—and may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also make additional gifts; each one also qualifies for a tax deduction. The trust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

Each year the trust pays you or another named individual the same dollar amount you choose at the start. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to RMHC Charleston as a lump sum.

A beneficiary designation clearly identifies how specific assets will be distributed after your death.

A charitable gift annuity involves a simple contract between you and RMHC Charleston where you agree to make a gift to RMHC Charleston and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life.
